Philharmonia Orchestra of New York: Symphonic Storyboards With Project Hand in Hand

Hailed as one of the “most progressive modern orchestras” by The Observer, Philharmonia Orchestra of New York (PONY) returns to Rose Theater for two powerful concerts of musical storytelling by Wagner and Rimsky-Korsakov under maestro Atsushi Yamada, including the dazzling orchestral showpiece Scheherazade. Symphonic Storyboards takes audiences on gripping journeys of love and lust, light and darkness, passion and betrayal, all told through music performed by world-class musicians accompanied by striking original films on a huge screen.

PONY is proud to welcome back the students of Project Hand in Hand for these concerts. For the past six years, the musicians of PONY and Project Hand in Hand have worked together to help the children of Japan affected by the East Japan disaster through the power of music.

Richard Wagner, Tannhäuser Overture
A story of vice and virtue, Tannhäuser tells the story of a knight torn between the sinful pleasures of Venus and the religious purity of Elisabeth. Adam Grannick’s moving original film, Runaway Overture, accompanies this stirring music.

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Scheherazade
One of the most dazzling orchestral showpieces of all time, Rimsky-Korsakov’s kaleidoscopic work is an exotic fantasy filled with sensuality and wonder based on the Middle Eastern and Indian tales known as One Thousand and One Nights (The Arabian Nights.) The story comes to life in an original film by Daniel Brodie, whose visuals have accompanied Kanye West, Mariah Carey and Aladdin on Broadway.

Giuseppe Verdi, Opera Highlights from Aida, Il Trovatore, La Traviata, Nabucco, and Rigoletto
PONY draws on its roots as a consummate opera orchestra in vocal and instrumental selections from one of the most beloved opera composers of all time. Featuring soprano Michelle Areyzaga, mezzo-soprano Rachel Calloway, baritone Robert Kerr, and tenor Alex Richardson, with choral accompaniment by the accomplished singers of Project Hand in Hand.
