Name

Sexmob at 30

Description

Still thriving and evolving 30 years since its founding, the visionary quartet Sexmob continues to explode all preconceived notions of what an instrumental jazz band can be. Formed in 1996 out of a weekly residency at New York’s Knitting Factory, the band — slide trumpeter Steven Bernstein, alto/baritone saxophonist Briggan Krauss, bassist Tony Scherr, and drummer Kenny Wollesen — have changed the game with its raw, improvisatory groove and swing, endlessly inventive arrangements, and uproarious sense of fun, exhibiting high musical standards while blithely blowing past all boundaries of genre and taste. From their 1998 debut Din of Inequity onward, they’ve formed one of the truly enduring and substantive artistic bonds of their time, a quartet chemistry that retains every bit of its freshness and capacity for surprise. “At this point,” declared NPR First Listen, “Sexmob is a collective ideal.”

Sexmob has toured extensively for three decades, playing everywhere from opera houses and rock clubs to house concerts and major international festivals. The band earned a DownBeat Critics Poll Award (Beyond Group of the Year, 2002), appears on Bill Frisell’s GRAMMY-winning Unspeakable (produced by Hal Willner), and is currently touring and collaborating with Laurie Anderson, with a new live album, Let X=X, out May 8, 2026 on Nonesuch.
