Name

Hometown Heroes: Harlem’s Own Bertha Hope Quintet

Description

Celebrate one of Harlem’s living legends as trailblazing pianist, composer, and bandleader Bertha Hope brings her trio to the stage. A beacon for generations of musicians and an inaugural recipient of the Jazz Legacies Fellowship from the Jazz Foundation of America and the Mellon Foundation, Hope continues to champion the music of her late husband, Elmo Hope, a pivotal figure of the bebop era whose close relationships with Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell shaped the modern jazz piano sound. As part of the Hometown Heroes series, this performance highlights Harlem’s vital place in jazz history and features rarely heard Elmo Hope compositions alongside beloved favorites, brought to life through Hope’s powerful artistry and enduring vision.
