As part of the Ertegun Hall of Fame series, we honor NEA Jazz Master Lou Donaldson, a towering figure in jazz since the 1950s, when he collaborated with legends like Milt Jackson and Thelonious Monk. Known for his “soul sax” sound, Donaldson blends straight-ahead jazz, blues, bebop, and soul, creating a groove-laden style that’s unmistakably his own. Though Sweet Poppa Lou will be enjoying tonight's performance from his home in Florida, his spirit will guide the music as surprise guests and music director Champian Fulton salute him on his 98th birthday.
