Description
Teatro Nuovo presents Bel Canto classics and rarities with a period-instrument orchestra and a performing style the Wall Street Journal calls “transformative.” Carolina Uccelli was unique: the only female opera composer to reach a major theater in Italy's Bel Canto era. Her promising talent had strong supporters, Gioachino Rossini among them. But “Anna di Resburgo” was overshadowed by the premiere of “Lucia di Lammermoor” just a month earlier in the same city (Naples), and Uccelli's theatrical career did not take flight. Thanks to the survival of just one manuscript copy, her music can speak for itself in the 21st century. The opera is a stirring Romantic thriller ready to join the world's repertory. Pre-opera serenade at 6:00pm: Songs by Uccelli and arias composed by Donizetti and Verdi for the original cast of "Anna." Pre-opera lecture at 6:30pm: Will Crutchfield introduces “Anna di Resburgo.”
