The JLCO plays Brubeck:
Description
Pianist Dan Nimmer leads the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis in a centennial celebration of composer, pianist, and bandleader Dave Brubeck. Special guest pianists include Sean Mason, one of New York City’s top rising jazz stars; and Thandi Ntuli, a young South African phenomenon who recently performed with the JLCO for The South African Songbook. With fresh arrangements of Brubeck’s greatest works, the JLCO will demonstrate why his music remains so popular and enjoyable, from the unusual rhythms and unforgettable melodies that made Time Out a record-breaking hit album, to the explorations of diverse musical formats that endeared Brubeck to audiences around the world. Enjoy brilliantly crafted versions of favorites like “Take Five,” “Blue Rondo a la Turk,” “Unsquare Dance,” “The Duke,” “Strange Meadowlark,” and many others.
Brubeck is rightfully considered one of our music’s most influential, ambitious, and downright admirable figures. Not only did he make our music and our country better, but as a global jazz ambassador he represented the best American ideals to the rest of the world. The JLCO aims to follow his example long into the 21st century, and the orchestra is excited to pay tribute to 100 years of the beloved jazz giant.
